AWS

Protect AWS cloud databases using AWS-hosted infrastructure

This feature allows customers to protect the Amazon RDS (Native), Amazon DocumentDB, and Amazon Redshift with the snapshot-based approach in a Commvault Cloud AWS-hosted infrastructure. This provides a simplified onboarding experience and additional cost savings since customers are not required to configure their backup gateway setup.

DynamoDB protection using S3 Export method

DynamoDB tables can now be protected using the native S3 export method and restored from a point-in-time backup. This removes front-end DynamoDB cost and eliminates any performance impact to production workloads while performing the backups.

Snapshot-based protection of Amazon RDS for DB2 instances

Commvault now supports snapshot-based backup and restore of Amazon RDS for DB2 instances, allowing for quick restores in the event of a disaster.

SaaS backup for Amazon S3 using Commvault-hosted infrastructure

Easily back up your Amazon S3 workloads using Commvault SaaS-hosted infrastructure. You can protect your data without installing additional proxy or gateway servers, resulting in a simplified backup process.

Azure

Azure Table support in SaaS

You can securely protect and back up your Azure Tables using Commvault Cloud SaaS. This ensures that the data stored in Azure Tables is safeguarded, reducing the risk of data loss or corruption, and providing easy data recovery options.

Support for Azure Ultra Disks and Premium SSDv2 Disks

Customers using Azure will now be able to easily back up and recover their high performance Ultra and SSDv2 disks through incremental snapshots. This feature ensures that important data stored in these disks can be securely saved and quickly restored when needed, providing peace of mind and minimizing the risk of data loss.

Support for Azure Confidential VMs

Protect confidential virtual machines in Azure by adding support for platform managed keys (PMK). This feature enables the protection of Azure confidential VMs in cases where the OS disk is not encrypted or when it is encrypted with PMK. However, customer managed keys (CMK) encryption is not currently supported. Safeguarding data with PMK provides enhanced security for the end customer’s sensitive information.

Support for Azure VM Extensions

This feature allows customers to use Azure VM extensions in conjunction with Commvault for improved functionality and security. Commvault retains the association between the VM and the extension, ensuring that it remains intact even after restoration, providing a seamless and reliable experience for end customers.

Support for OS Disk Swap in Azure In-Place Restores

With support for OS disk swapping during in-place restores, customers can now easily replace the operating system disk on a virtual machine without having to delete and re-create the entire VM. This saves time and effort, simplifying the process of restoring VMs and minimizing disruption to business operations.

Support for Azure Trusted Launch VMs

Commvault now supports Trusted Launch VMs, adding a robust layer of security to protect your Azure virtual machines. This feature provides peace of mind with the integrity of your VMs during the launch process, safeguarding your critical data.

You can now protect macOS devices configured as a file server.

Multi-Geo Ring Switcher to map Ring ID to user friendly Geography Name

The Multi-Geo Ring Switcher or Selector feature has been simplified so multi-geo customers can access regions from another geography seamlessly. The Geo selector now shows the geography (geo) names along with Ring ID in the dropdown menu so customers can quickly switch to protect the workload in regions from another geography.

This enhances the overall user experience and ensures seamless navigation between different geographic locations.

Support for Amazon EKS using Commvault Cloud Infrastructure in AWS

Commvault Cloud SaaS has expanded its support for Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) using Commvault infrastructure hosted on AWS. This enhancement simplifies the EKS onboarding process, allowing customers to quickly and easily protect their applications running on Amazon EKS.

Cloud Rewind

Appranix is now Cloud Rewind

Appranix has been officially rebranded to Cloud Rewind. The new name embodies Commvault’s mission to help businesses seamlessly rewind and recover their complex cloud environments, ensuring minimal disruption and maximum efficiency.

Support for Additional Regions for Cloud Rewind (Appranix) Integration

Integration of Cloud Rewind (Appranix) with Commvault Cloud (SaaS) now supports additional regions within the following geographic areas: Europe, United Kingdom, Middle East, and Australia & New Zealand.

On Prem Protection

Disk caching for frequent backups of Oracle archived logs

Disk caching enables frequent backups of Oracle and Oracle RAC archive log files, as often as every five minutes, with both compression and encryption activated. These backup systems function seamlessly, even during Commvault server maintenance, ensuring continuous protection of the database across disk and cloud libraries.

Support for Azure Stack HCI Hypervisor

Customers can use Azure Stack HCI as a standalone hypervisor in the Command Center, simplifying the configuration process. By eliminating the need to configure it as a Hyper-V hypervisor, customers benefit from a streamlined experience and can quickly leverage the capabilities of Azure Stack HCI.

Continuous Protection for SAP HANA Log Backups Using Disk Cache

This feature enables administrators to provide uninterrupted log backup support for SAP HANA, allowing log protection even when the CommServe computer is in maintenance mode. This feature ensures that the database is encrypted and transported using a Secure Data Transfer (SDT) pipeline to back up to the configured target (disk library, cloud library, or HSX).

Recovery Orchestration

Perform on-demand cleanup of recovery target

You can perform on-demand cleanup of recovered workloads and also disable automatic cleanup after Control Plane deletion. This helps you undo or reset the recovery process and ensure that all resources created during the recovery process are removed.

Azure Express Configuration

Now, you can simplify the onboarding process for configuring an Azure virtual machine workload. Sign into your Azure billing account using the Express Configuration wizard and automatically complete all necessary provisioning steps. This seamless experience helps reduce configuration errors and frustration with performing configuration steps in multiple portals.

Management Service Providers

ConnectWise PSA Integration for MSPs [Available early October]

The ConnectWise PSA integration includes basic CRM functions, including account creation and account sync between Connectwise PSA and the Commvault MSP Portal.

Business Dashboard for MSP Portal

The enhanced MSP Portal now provides an intuitive dashboard with key usage and cost data. Users will benefit from a single glance view of detailed cost, usage information, and insightful growth trends for managed accounts, elevating business operation monitoring capabilities.

MSP Portal Tenant Account Data Deletion

MSP Portal Tenant Account Data Deletion allows Managed Service Providers to seamlessly delete customer accounts without having to contact Customer Support, improving the overall customer experience and reducing compliance risks.

MSP Monitoring Dashboards

The first phase of the technical monitoring dashboard offers MSPs the ability to view their customers within the Command Center in aggregated viewpoints. This helps prioritize clients and make informed decisions on which clients need attention. In addition to the summary views, MSPs can view data from tenant-centric viewpoints.

Recovery Orchestration

Commvault Cleanroom Recovery Integration with Palo Alto XSOAR [Available late September]

Commvault Cleanroom Recovery with Palo Alto XSOAR solution allows you to manage recovery groups and automate response and recovery actions seamlessly. You can create recovery groups, add workloads to groups, set recovery points, and change recovery targets, all within XSOAR. Additionally, anomalies detected in the Cleanroom recovery solution trigger events in XSOAR, enhancing overall security response and incident management.

Support for Nutanix AHV Source VMs

Nutanix AHV VMs are supported for recovery in Cleanroom Recovery. They are automatically converted and recovered into the designated cleanroom target.

Repave VMs Using “Golden Image”

Cleanroom Recovery of VMs using a Golden Image enables you to use templates (both public marketplace and private custom templates) to create the Azure VM in the cleanroom before restoring data to the VM. This simplifies and accelerates the recovery process and allows you to recover applications from cyberattacks to a known good state.

SaaS Applications

Deprecation of Wiki support in Teams

For existing tenants who previously have backed up Wiki within Teams, you can restore the Wiki in HTML format within the Files tab of the same team or a different team.

Commvault Cloud with Premium Microsoft 365 Backup Storage

Microsoft 365 Backup Storage delivers a high-speed, snapshot-like, in-place backup that addresses mass recovery scenarios, such as ransomware. Currently in public preview, this solution integrates with Commvault’s traditional GRAPH API-based M365 backup to provide a seamless experience.

Restore Mailboxes and OneDrive Users using Active Directory Groups

M365 Restore by Active Directory Group allows you to restore the most recent data set for many users as a group. This feature streamlines the restoration process by providing a mechanism for logical groupings of users to be restored together, eliminating the need for different backup apps and allowing organizations to prioritize restores efficiently.

Support for Microsoft Planner in Teams

Microsoft Planner is supported in Teams, allowing you to manage your tasks, collaborate with team members, and stay organized all within the Teams interface. Commvault Cloud can back up the Planner tab within the Teams interface alongside Team data with this update.

SaaS Platform and Experience

Appranix Integration with Commvault Cloud SaaS

Appranix integrates with Commvault Cloud SaaS to provide you with a seamless and efficient data management experience. This integration allows you to easily backup, restore, and protect your data using Commvault’s powerful capabilities while leveraging Appranix’s next-generation cloud-native rebuild capabilities to reduce the time to rebuild and recover your cloud environments from days or weeks to hours or minutes. 

Backup Azure Blob and Azure Files Using Backup Gateways

Deploy your own backup gateway to protect Azure Blob, ADLS, and Azure Files in cases where Commvault Cloud SaaS infrastructure is not available or cannot be used. This provides you with the flexibility to control your data plane and use private endpoints or support additional regions.

Self-Service Azure Network Firewall Configuration for Azure Workloads

Azure Network Firewall Configuration in Commvault Cloud SaaS enables you to secure and protect your Azure workloads, boosting efficiency and improving user experience.

Single VM SKU to Replace Tiered VM SKUs

The previous tiered Commvault Cloud SaaS VM SKUs have been replaced with one that includes all capabilities, such as file systems and databases. This change simplifies the purchasing process, eliminates the need for sizing exercises, and prevents confusion about the expected behavior of different tiers.

Throughput Enhancements for Azure VM Restores

Enhancements to Azure VM restores include faster data retrieval with ReadAhead, integration with Azure Stack, better error handling and retries, and an increased cache size for improved performance. Additionally, excessive logging has been turned off, and a performance summary is now provided after each backup/restore job.

Support for Google Cloud Platform Key Management Service

Commvault Cloud now supports GCP Key Management Service (KMS), allowing users to protect their encryption keys with GCP KMS before storing them in the CommServe database, ensuring enhanced data security and control.

Support for Azure Trusted Launch VMs

Commvault now supports Trusted Launch VMs, adding a robust layer of security to protect your Azure virtual machines. This feature provides peace of mind with the integrity of your VMs during the launch process, safeguarding your critical data.

Public & Private Cloud Protection

VMware Region-based Backups in vSphere Environment

Region-based backups for your VMware hypervisor can now be performed easily using an access node within the same region as your vSphere environment. This feature provides a more efficient and optimized backup process, enhances data security, and reduces transfer time for faster data recovery.

Recovery Orchestration

Cleanroom Recovery for Commvault Cloud SaaS

Commvault has launched Cleanroom Recovery for Commvault Cloud SaaS, allowing users to manage cyber recovery through the SaaS control plane. With dynamic resource adjustments for efficient restoration, receive consistent functionality across software and SaaS offerings. Cleanroom Recovery supports multi-tenancy and can be accessed via APIs for task automation and integration with other systems.

Single Domain Controller Active Directory Recovery in Cleanroom Recovery

Users can include a single domain controller in the Cleanroom recovery group to streamline the recovery process and integrate Active Directory seamlessly. This allows for the seamless recovery of Active Directory alongside other workloads into a Cleanroom target for the recovery of directory services.

SaaS Applications

Raise Visibility of Group Policy Objects to Simplify Active Directory Restore 

Group Policy Objects (GPOs) are stored partially in SYSVOL files and partially in Active Directory. They can be difficult to restore in the directory without knowing exactly where they are located. This feature simplifies the restoration of GPOs by improving their accessibility, allowing users to locate and restore them quickly and easily. 

Guided Restore Wizard for M365 

Users now have an easy and interactive process for selecting options for in or out of place restores, restoring individual items or groups, and more. This wizard-based process improves the overall experience, providing a seamless way to configure backups and restore data. 

Security

Use Machine Learning to Detect Suspicious Extension Changes

Use machine learning algorithms and historical behaviors to detect suspicious file extension changes occurring within backups. This provides timely, accurate alerts of changes that could indicate threat activity, which may impact your ability to recover clean data. Anomalies are shown on the Threat Indicators dashboard and can be scanned with Threat Scan for deeper analysis, or data can be recovered to a pre-anomalous clean state. This capability enhances Commvault’s overall anomaly and threat detection and helps organizations secure their data faster to remain resilient to attack.

Storage Solutions

Default Compliance Lock on all Air Gap Protect Storage Pools

The Compliance Lock feature is introduced for all Air Gap Protect (AGP) storage pools to provide enhanced data protection by enabling a security lock on new and existing AGP Storage pools. Users can benefit from self-service support for resetting locks, which is equipped with a 24-hour auto re-enable functionality, promoting better cyber resilience.

Data Classification for File & Object Archiving

The File & Object Archive Data Classification interface enables users to apply, modify, and remove tags from files and folders. You can create custom user-defined tags, such as archiving tags, with specific retention times and metadata rules and use those to define plans to archive data. This provides efficient data organization and management, making it easier for users to find files that are already archived and to be archived.

SaaS Application Cyber Recovery

Public Folder Reporting in the M365 Health Report

This enhancement in the M365 Health Report shows public folders’ last backup status and SLA. It is displayed in the Exchange tab alongside the current user mailbox status, providing users with a comprehensive view of the health of their public folders.

Backup and Restore Performance Enhancements for SharePoint

SharePoint Performance Enhancements deliver significant backup and restore performance improvements for SharePoint Online. Users can expect a 5-7 times backup and restore performance boost.

Kubernetes Capacity (TB) Metering

The Kubernetes Metering with Capacity (TB) simplifies tracking data usage measurements instead of using a virtual operating instance. This streamlines cost management by more accurately representing storage consumption, ensuring you only pay for the exact data space you use.

Clustered File Systems Self-Service Onboarding

Streamline workload onboarding to save time and improve overall user experience. Self-service onboarding of Clustered File Systems allows users to quickly and safely onboard their workloads onto the Commvault Cloud SaaS solution without external assistance.

Self-Service File System Configuration Wizard

Reduce costs and improve overall user experience with Commvault’s self-service File System configuration feature. It offers users a secure and streamlined process for file system configuration in Commvault Cloud SaaS. It minimizes high egress charges and enhances performance by prompting users to select the appropriate cloud vendor, region, and backup gateway settings.

Self-Service File Server Onboarding Using AWS Hosted Infrastructure

Makes backup for Amazon EC2 (snap) an easy button solution similar to AWS cloud-native backup.

Enhancements

  • Dynamics 365 Restore for Large Tables: This enhancement improves Microsoft Dynamics 365 restore performance by enabling users to efficiently restore tables with a million or more records. Now records can be processed in batches and compute resources scaled dynamically for faster restore to help meet stringent RTO requirements.
  • Detailed Application Storage Reports – Workload and Sub-client Usage: Our Application Storage Reports now give users more detail for efficient store monitoring. This includes summaries on workload, showing the storage consumption percentage, compression ratio, and monthly growth rate. It also provides sub-client information, such as the percentage of storage consumed, and offers a comprehensive drill-down to job report details.
  • NEW in-product onboarding guides to help configure Azure VM, Azure Blob, Azure Files, ADLS, VMware, Hyper-V, and Kubernetes: Guides to help you navigate through the product to help configure your workloads.

  • Threat Scan for SaaS: Threat Scan for SaaS now supports Files to help ensure you can securely recover data as quickly as possible by identifying malware, encrypted content, and vulnerable data. This provides safe recovery options to recover clean data and avoid reinfection by accidentally restoring malicious files.
  • Risk Analysis for SaaS: Risk Analysis for SaaS supports M365, offering a better way to secure and defend your M365 data by making it easy to systematically discover, classify, and protect dark and sensitive data, empowering a proactive defense against data breaches and helping ensure compliance.
  • Auto Recovery for VMs: Auto Recovery as a service for VMs delivers secure, automated recovery at scale to help you quickly and securely recover VM workloads from disasters with minimal data loss and downtime.

New Features

  • GDPR Compliance for Salesforce Backup & Recovery (Coming in Late March 2024): GDPR Compliance for Salesforce Backup & Recovery enables you to bring Salesforce backups in compliance with GDPR’s “right to be forgotten” and “right to rectification” requirements.
  • Threatwise – Windows 11 Support for Sensors: Windows 11 Support for Sensors emulates Windows 11 systems, allowing the ability to simulate the customer environment better.
  • Threatwise – Ability to disable file uploads to TSOC: Administrators can now prevent files uploaded to sensors by attackers from being transferred to the TOSC when it is prohibited by compliance, such as when the TSOC and Sensor are in different countries.
  • Threatwise – Add Comment Column to exceptions page for FullOS: Administrators can now enter a comment on exceptions added to a FullOS service to track why the exception was added.

Enhancements

  • Improved custom plan options in the wizard for SaaS Hybrid Cloud extended retentions: Improvements to the Onboarding Wizard make it easier for users to configure their custom retention plan, which can now have monthly and yearly retentions during onboarding.
  • Salesforce Backup – Identify Non-Restorable Salesforce Objects: Quickly identify non-restorable Salesforce objects before trying an in-place restore. You can adjust restore configurations before execution and avoid unnecessary failures.

New Products

  • NEW Active Directory Backup: We are excited to announce the release of Commvault Cloud for Active Directory. With the launch of this new paid offering, Commvault drastically enhances the protection of your critical identity and access management infrastructure. Key features include: 
    • Single-solution protection for both Active Directory and Azure AD (now Microsoft Entra ID) 
    • Accelerated recovery of deleted and changed objects by comparing all objects and attributes between backups 
    • Recovery of Group Policy Objects, including their security, links, and settings 
    • Recovery of Azure AD conditional access policies and roles 
    • Rollback of overwritten or corrupted attributes across many objects at once 
    • More frequent backups of AD, ensuring it is always possible to restore a recent copy 
    • Layered security with air-gapped data copies

      All clients who have previously enabled Active Directory in the Service Catalog and configured a backup will be automatically transitioned to this new release at no cost for 6 months.

New Features

  • Amazon EC2 Backups without Gateways: Protect Amazon EC2 instances without deploying a backup gateway in your AWS account seamlessly with the new simplified guided configuration experience & lower your cloud storage costs by using the combined storage tiers.
  • User Interface Branding Updates: As announced earlier this month, Metallic is now part of Commvault Cloud. While there is no impact on existing end user features, functionality, or usability – a new logo, font, and color treatment is now present within our UI. For more information on Commvault Cloud, powered by Metallic AI, check out our on-demand launch event here.
  • Threatwise Advisor: Powered by Metallic AI, Threatwise Advisor intelligently leverages backup environment telemetry to determine the location and type of critical assets within an environment. By assessing data actively being protected within Commvault Cloud, Threatwise™ Advisor recommends decoy types and density to further safeguard critical workloads.
  • Export-Based Backup for Amazon RDS :Protect your Amazon RDS instances using export-based backup for long term retention and cross-cloud mobility & lower your cloud storage costs by using the combined storage tiers. Supported Amazon RDS Databases include  AuroraDB MySQL, AuroraDB Postgres, MariaDB, MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL and SQL Server.
  • Teams Compliance Search: Expanded compliance search capabilities for Teams, including support for channel posts, files, user chats, and more. To leverage these enhanced capabilities, user chats must be backed up via Microsoft’s paid Export API.
  • Support for Azure Data Lake (ADLS) with Multi-Node: Onboard ADLS as the supported workload, in addition to the currently supported object storage for Azure Blob and Azure File.

Enhancements

  • Rule-based Discovery and Backup for Azure Blob: Leverage rule-based backup for Azure Blob, including: Tag name, Tag value, Resource Group name, Azure Blob, or pattern.
  • Enhanced Overview Page: A new, simplified overview page provides users with critical information on backup health and status for VMs, Files, and SaaS apps. Access this view under the ‘Protect’ section in the left-hand navigation.
  • Service Account Removal for Teams: Commvault Cloud’s Teams configuration no longer requires a delegate token during the admin consent process to restore posts to an HTML file. To restore Teams posts to the Posts tab, admins must still authorize the App with delegate tokens during configuration.
  • Office 365 Email ID Restore: For disaster recovery scenarios, this additional recovery option enables users to restore mailbox and OneDrive data to the original location by matching the user’s email address rather than the user’s GUID.

  • Metallic Recovery Reserve Navigation: All Metallic Recovery Reserve storages (MRR Azure & MRR OCI) are now listed under the “Metallic Recovery Reserve” navigation.
  • Azure PaaS Databases – Direct to Cloud (Metallic Hosted Infrastructure): Backup all Azure PaaS Databases to MRR (hot) or Azure BYOS, using Metallic infrastructure without the need for the customers to setup their gateway.
  • Metallic Hub Enhancements: Improved user experience and design enhancements across the Metallic Hub to optimize performance, reduce clutter, and promote consistency for users. For more information, please see the following blog.
  • OCI Combined Storage Support: Allows users to leverage the cost benefits of OCI Archive tier without the manual two-step restore process associated with restoring data from archive tier.
  • Metallic API Credential Self-Service: New self-service feature enables you to create your API Service Account from the Metallic Command Center.
  • IRAP Certification: Metallic is now Infosec Registered Assessor Program (IRAP) certified, meeting stringent architecture, design, and security protocols for Australian government agencies and contractors.

  • Threatwise Updated Operating System to 22.04: Newly available TSOC (management console) upgrade for improved performance and administration that optimizes identity, access, and management for users.

  • OCI Marketplace Private Offers: OCI customers can now use their OCI universal credits to purchase Metallic offerings via OCI private offers.
  • New Backup Copy Health Report: Users and admins can now monitor and remediate issues using the new “IntelliSnap Backup Copy Health” Report.
  • Nutanix AHV Support: Introduces new Metallic backup capabilities for Nutanix AHV with support for IntelliSnap.
  • Teams 1:1 and Group Chat Support: Enables protecting Teams 1:1 and Group chats for users of your choice within Metallic. This new capability is built on the Microsoft Teams Export API.

  • Restartability of Exchange Restore Jobs: Ensures maximum restore efficiency, restarting any paused Exchange Online restore jobs where they left off.
  • OneDrive Restore Optimization: Enhances small scale restores by optimizing resource allocation (including testing for possible throttling) delivering high throughput for small and large restores alike.
  • Inactive User Data: Enables admins to more easily pinpoint which users have a large percentage of inactive vs. active data for more effective cleanup.

  • Mark SQL Database Backup unrestorable: Allows users to specify SQL Databases marked as unrestorable, enabling database backups to be deleted without impacting others.
  • Sub-client Follow Mount: Expands the ‘Follow Mount Point’ option from the job-level to the sub-client level.
  • Cluster and Namespace Support Enhancements: Protects all API resources visible to the Kube-API server with a single-click selection.
  • Attach Disk Support: Allows users to perform Attach Disk restores from snapshots without the need for multiple file-level restores.
  • Azure Key Vault Selection Support: Empowers users to select their own Azure Key Vault during VM restores.
  • VSA VMWARE Indexing Enhancements: Adds support for configuring backup type and disk filters at the VM level for Indexing V2 VMs.
  • One-time login code Enhancements: Provides alternate email codes for external provider authentication (SAML IDPs or Active Directories) in the event the primary authenticator is not reachable.
  • Azure Flexible Database Backup Support: Enables backup/restore support of Azure flexible servers for PostgreSQL and MySQL databases.
  • Azure VM Intellisnap Improvements: Provides new enhancements to support application consistent Intellisnap backups for Azure VMs.
